NEW ZEALAND ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS
Animal experiments don't work.
Animal experiments not only cause great suffering to animals, they can also harm humans. This is because many animal species are different from each other in the way their bodies work and they way they react to drugs and other treatments.
Different species, different reactions:
- Aspirin is a painkiller for humans, but is lethal to cats.
- Penicillin is a useful anaesthetic for humans, but kills guinea pigs.
- The drug thalidomide was cleared as safe for humans after being tested on animals, but caused birth defects.
- Parsley, a common garnish for humans, is deadly to parrots.
ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS:
Alternatives to animal experiments include:
- cell and tissue cultures
- computer models
- population studies
- and controlled low-risk studies on human volunteers.
With today's growing technology and understanding there is no excuse for our reliance on cruel animal experiments.
Learn about animal experiments so you can help argue against these cruel and needless tests.
