NEW ZEALAND BATTERY FARMS

The term 'battery' farming comes from the concept of the battery as a 'storage cell'. Battery farms in New Zealand store animals (typically pigs and chickens) in tiny cells (crates or cages) for the purpose of producing meat or eggs.

Battery farms cause serious problems for animals, such as:

  • The inability to express natural and instinctive behaviours (exercising, foraging and nest building).
  • The inability to escape from aggressive cage mates or other sources of danger or fear.
  • Lack of exercise and mental stimulation causes bone weakness and depression.

Animals living in New Zealand battery farms suffer both physically and mentally. New Zealand law states that animals are entitled to the five freedoms:

  • freedom from hunger and thirst
  • from physical discomfort
  • from pain, injury and disease
  • from fear and distress
  • and the freedom to display normal patterns of behaviour.

Battery farming is inherently cruel. Show you care and boycott battery farmed products.
